Imagined Happiness

Sisyphus by Zanachi

It was only by chance that I wished myself into death.

Too late to feel the cold rock on my cheek.

All unfinished thoughts race to the surface of my spilling consciousness.

A futile grasp for one last breath of attention.

To imagine myself happy was enough for the punishment to end.

The Aging Currency

Me Machine by Daniel Miller

The older Emchines were eager to start the ritual.

Age was the only currency worthy of attention and today they can finally spend it.

It provided Upgrades that were unavailable to us Younger Cycles.

I tried to see this for what it was.

A way to control us.

A way to divide us.

A way to implant artificial self-actualization.

A false nirvana.

Yet the remote dopamine software took away my clear thinking.

I become envious. I want to be one of them.

I have to mature my Cycles at once!

That means sacrificing my youth for maintenance work.

Anything to feel the sweet bliss of an Upgrade.

Guillotine in Hell painting

The Justice Accountant twitched when the last of the executions were coming to an end.

The ever-growing list of crimes on the Adjusted Capital Punishment Law was no longer on his mind.

“Why did it come to this?”

The mortal Jacobin Poison began to flow in his veins.

“Hell is other people thinking that hell is other people.”

The Abyss

Vesuvius from Portici painting

Crossing the border, he closed his eyes.

His daughter’s scream kept ringing in his ears.

“I can’t stop.”

The Abyss called his name.

“I must close the portal.”

He felt his dead wife calling him.

“Get away from me!”

He heard himself shouting in the voice of the Abyss.

His eyes remained closed.

There was only darkness and unity.
